The Kodaira International Friendship Association (KIFA) runs a wide range of activities to deepen relations between foreigners and Japanese, as for example Japanese language classes, cross-cultural experience events and, above all, the KIFA Festival. In the course of our coverage, we realized that these events would not materialize without the help of KIFA staff and volunteers. This changed our attitude towards the subject of volunteers and international exchange. What kinds of persons are involved in KIFA activities and what are they thinking, and then, how do their efforts connect to foreigners and the local people? We wanted to report what we have seen.
